pyrenees snowshoeing

Snowshoeing in the French Ariege-Pyrenees.

A simple and wonderful way of exploring the magical winter landscapes of the Pyrenees is to use snow shoes.  Unlike skiing & snowboarding which takes days, weeks, years to master, the basics of snowshoeing can be explained, demonstrated and practised in a few minutes.  However, the safety of winter walking, etc requires much more experience & expertise.  But a safe, simple way to start is to visit one of a number of Nordic ski resorts in the Ariege-Pyrenees.  You can hire the 'raquettes' (snowshoes) receive some instructions and then follow well signed posted routes specially created just for people to snowshoe.  The distances range from 1 to over 12 kilometres.  Plateau de Beille near Tarascon, the finishing point of a stage of the Tour de France 2015, has many trails, a good restaurant and spectacular 360 degree views.  Husky Dog Sleigh rides and a fun 'luge' piste offer alternative fun for all the family.

With local guides, it is also possible to walk in safe areas away from the dangers of avalanches yet giving the feeling of freedom & exploration on 'virgin snow' surrounded by the magnificent high peaks of the Pyrenees.

Fun for all the family!
